WEF Davos 2027, 18-22 January: at Zurich you get 2-3 hours on the ground
The World Economic Forum 2027 runs in Davos from 18 to 22 January. In those five days Zurich becomes the hardest airport in Europe: without approved parking the aircraft has two or three hours, then it must leave. Anyone who does not know this discovers in January that they have to pay for an empty repositioning and the crew's return, at that week's prices.

The two-hour rule
During Forum week, at Zurich, an aircraft without approved parking can stay two or three hours. It disembarks the passengers and leaves. That is not a recommendation: it is how the airport manages demand that in those days exceeds apron capacity. The economic consequence is precise and has to be calculated in advance: the aircraft has to go somewhere, the crew has to get back, and then both have to return to collect you. That is two extra flights and two crew nights, at the prices of the worst week of the year. A quote that does not include them is not a quote: it is a deposit.

The numbers behind the Forum effect
In 2025 the World Economic Forum brought 709 additional movements to Zurich, a 10% increase over a normal week. Across two years, private flights tied to the event tripled. Those are the numbers that explain why availability runs out months ahead and why that week's rates do not follow the rest of the winter's price list. Someone organising in December does not find the same offer as someone organising in September. On this date, the advantage is bought with lead time.
The clash with Kitzbühel
In 2027 there is an overlap worth knowing about: while the Forum runs from 18 to 22 January, at Kitzbühel from 18 to 24 the Hahnenkamm races take place, with super-G on Friday 22, downhill on Saturday 23 and slalom on Sunday 24. Two events absorbing fleet and crews in the same region on the same days. The result is that in the third week of January 2027 aircraft availability across the whole alpine arc will be the lowest of the year.
The alternatives, without illusions
Samedan is the other door, on the far side of the Flüela, also reachable by loading the car onto the Vereina shuttle train, eighteen minutes. But Samedan has no ILS, no runway lighting and no night operations: in January it closes early, and it does not accept jets requiring the higher fire categories. St Gallen-Altenrhein and Friedrichshafen are less congested but further out. None of them is an easy answer. What works is deciding early and accepting the right compromise for your aircraft.
