Three Sundays, not three ordinary weekends
White Turf runs on the frozen lake of St Moritz and in 2027 falls on Sundays 7, 14 and 21 February, from 10:30 to 16:30. It is the 120th edition: international horse racing and skijoring on the ice. For aviation this means three days in which the Engadine receives a concentrated flow within a few hours. Samedan is Europe's highest airport and sits ten minutes from the resort: it is extremely convenient, and that is exactly why it fills.
Parking runs out before the slots
At Samedan the first two hours of parking are free. That is the signal of how the airport works: land, disembark, leave. On White Turf weekends, as at Christmas and New Year, there is no stand. Anyone wanting to keep the aircraft in the Engadine for the weekend must agree it far in advance, or budget for the empty repositioning to another airport and the crew's return. That is two extra flights and they belong in the quote from the start, not afterwards.
Daylight, and what it means in February
Samedan has no runway or approach lighting and permits no night operations. In February the day is longer than in December, but the usable window still ends in the afternoon. The racing finishes at 16:30. Anyone planning to leave straight afterwards must check there is still daylight at the planned hour, and have a plan if the day runs long. There is also no ILS: approaches are RNAV and on runway 03 the minimum descent altitude is 11,400 feet. Under low cloud you go to Zurich, which is three hours away by road.
Which aircraft actually gets there
Two filters, and they must be checked before you talk about price. First: jets requiring the higher fire categories are not accepted, which rules out the large long-range twins. Second: the crew must hold a current familiarisation briefing for the airport, valid for 24 months. On a peak date like these three Sundays, the real question is not which aircraft you prefer, but which aircraft with qualified crews are free that day.
