Salzburg LOWS: CAT III and 2,750 metres, but PPR from mid-December
Of the two airports serving Tyrol, Salzburg is the one that holds in bad weather: CAT II and III ILS on runway 15, 2,750 metres of asphalt, centreline and touchdown zone lighting. Innsbruck, 96 kilometres from Kitzbühel, demands simulator training to descend below 3,000 feet. Salzburg is 81 kilometres away and demands none. In January you see the difference.

The only alpine airport with CAT III
Salzburg has one runway, 15/33, 2,750 metres long and 45 wide, with a 100-metre stopway to the north, at 430 metres of elevation. It carries ILS/DME of category II and III, centreline lighting and touchdown zone lighting. Among the airports serving the eastern Alps that is a rare fact: it means being able to descend in very poor visibility. Innsbruck, closer to many Tyrolean resorts, offers nothing comparable and requires simulator training to operate below 3,000 feet of ceiling.
PPR from mid-December
In the peak period, starting mid-December, Salzburg requires PPR. It is not a hard cap like Geneva's or Chambéry's, but it is still a step that has to be taken in time. Operating hours are 06:00 to 23:00 local every day, with the sole exception of ambulance flights. Main parking positions number fourteen, plus the general aviation apron, and there are three hangars totalling 5,660 square metres.
The procedures you request in advance
Two details no commercial page writes down. First: the missed approach on runway 15 is considered challenging, while runway 33 has an RNP procedure. Second: certain special procedures require authorisation from Austro Control, the Austrian air traffic authority. If the operator you are offered does not already hold them, they have to be requested, and that takes time. Asking early is the only way not to discover it the day before.
January 2027: Hahnenkamm
From 18 to 24 January 2027 Kitzbühel hosts the 87th edition of the Hahnenkamm races: super-G on Friday 22, downhill on the Streif on Saturday 23, slalom on the Ganslern on Sunday 24. Kitzbühel is 81 kilometres from Salzburg. Those are the days the airport works at maximum, and when the parking must be requested together with the slot. In the same week, 18 to 22 January, the World Economic Forum is held in Davos: aircraft and crew availability across the whole alpine region tightens at once.
