Kitzbühel: Salzburg is 81 km away, Innsbruck 96. That is not the only difference
There are two airports for Kitzbühel and they look equivalent: Salzburg at 81 kilometres, Innsbruck at 96. They are not. Salzburg has category II and III ILS and 2,750 metres of runway. Innsbruck has a single runway at the bottom of a valley and demands simulator training from the crew to descend below 3,000 feet of ceiling. In January that difference decides whether you land.

Fifteen kilometres of difference, and a different rule
Salzburg is 81 kilometres from Kitzbühel, about an hour and a half by car. Innsbruck is 96. On a map that is nearly the same thing. In the air it is not. Salzburg has a 2,750 by 45 metre runway with ILS/DME of category II and III, centreline lighting and touchdown zone lighting: you can descend in very poor visibility. Innsbruck has a single 2,000-metre runway at the bottom of the Inn valley, with mountains on both sides, and requires the crew to have flown the approach in visual conditions on site or trained in a simulator before using the instrument procedures below 3,000 feet of ceiling or 5 kilometres of visibility. In January, under snow, that is what decides whether your flight lands or diverts.

Hahnenkamm week
From 18 to 24 January 2027 Kitzbühel hosts the 87th edition of the Hahnenkamm races. The programme: downhill training from Tuesday 19 to Thursday 21, super-G on the Streifalm on Friday 22 at 11:30, downhill on the Streif on Saturday 23 at 11:30, slalom on the Ganslern on Sunday 24, first run at 10:30 and second at 13:30. Those are the days the Tyrolean and Salzburg airports work at maximum together. The practical rule: request the slot and the stand together, and early, at both airports.
The calendar clash nobody flags
In 2027 the Hahnenkamm races and the World Economic Forum overlap: the Forum runs in Davos from 18 to 22 January, the races in Kitzbühel from 18 to 24. Two events that absorb aircraft, crews and stands in the same region on the same days. That is not a calendar footnote: it is why anyone organising a trip to Kitzbühel for those dates has to move months in advance, not in December.
