Innsbruck LOWI: without simulator training you do not go below 3,000 feet

Innsbruck has 2,000 metres of runway at the bottom of the Inn valley, with mountains on both sides. The rule that decides everything sits in the airport's technical page and not in the brochures: before using the instrument approach procedures with less than 3,000 feet of ceiling or 5 kilometres of visibility, the crew must have trained on site in visual conditions or in a simulator. Without that training, in bad weather you go to Salzburg or Munich.

What constrains the flight Operating notes written in Italian
  • Pista unica 08/26, 2.000 metri, quota 1.906 piedi.
  • Parcheggio limitato.
  • Coordinamento slot tramite Slots Coordination Austria.

The rule that selects the operators

Innsbruck is wedged between two mountain ranges and its instrument procedures are among the most demanding in Europe. The airport puts it in writing: before using those procedures with less than 3,000 feet of ceiling above aerodrome level or less than 5 kilometres of visibility, the crew must have flown the approach in visual conditions on site or trained in a flight simulation device. This narrows the list of usable operators, and it narrows it precisely on the days when the weather is bad — which is when it matters. Anyone offering you Innsbruck in January must be able to tell you the crew has that training.

Two thousand metres and a Föhn

There is one runway: 08/26, two thousand metres, at 1,906 feet of elevation. The dominant wind is the Föhn, and it changes the way you arrive: with an easterly Föhn the approach comes in over the Nordkette, because that track reduces turbulence; otherwise you navigate visually west along the Inn valley and line up on runway 08. These are technical details, but they explain why delays and diversions at Innsbruck are not a traffic problem: they are a wind problem.

What January really requires

Hahnenkamm week, 18 to 24 January 2027, is when Innsbruck and Salzburg work at maximum together. Kitzbühel is 96 kilometres from Innsbruck and 81 from Salzburg: the two options are genuinely alternative, and both should be kept open. Innsbruck has limited parking and coordinated slots; it pays to decide early and to keep a plan B ready. Worth adding that in the same week, from 18 to 22 January, the World Economic Forum is held in Davos: aircraft demand across the whole alpine region concentrates into five days.

How we work

Alpine Private Jet works with Air-Dynamic, a Swiss company that arranges charter flights and operates helicopter and air ambulance directly. At Innsbruck the check is the crew training first, then the slot, then the parking. We also tell you what plan B at Salzburg or Munich costs, before you need it. Intermediation fee written into the quote. Quote in 1 minute.

Questions we get

Why does Innsbruck require special training?

Because it lies at the bottom of the Inn valley with high terrain on both sides. The airport requires the crew to have trained on site in visual conditions or in a simulator before using the instrument procedures below 3,000 feet of ceiling or 5 km visibility.

How long is the runway?

Two thousand metres, single runway 08/26, at 1,906 feet of elevation.

Is PPR required?

Yes. The request goes to airport operations, and slots are coordinated by Slots Coordination Austria.

How far is Kitzbühel from Innsbruck?

96 kilometres. Salzburg is closer: 81 kilometres, about an hour and a half by car.

What effect does the Föhn have?

With an easterly Föhn the approach comes over the Nordkette to reduce turbulence. It is the phenomenon that drives most delays and diversions at this airport.

Is there parking?

Availability is limited and must be requested in advance, particularly during Hahnenkamm week.

Tell us the date. We tell you where you land.

Give us the day and how many of you are travelling: we come back with the airport that holds up on that date, the aircraft that fits your luggage and what the last leg costs.
