Gstaad: the airport is next door, but in winter it takes only turboprops

Gstaad has an airport in the next village, at Saanen, with 1,400 metres of asphalt runway. It looks like the perfect answer until you read the real constraint: the limit is 15,000 kg maximum take-off mass, and in winter fire cover reduces access to small turboprops, the Pilatus PC-12 kind. A real jet, in January, does not go to Saanen.

Why the jet does not land here

The airport exists, but not for your aircraft in January

Saanen, a few minutes from Gstaad, has a 1,400-metre asphalt runway at 1,002 metres of altitude. The declared limit is 15,000 kg maximum take-off mass, which on its own would let some light jets through. The constraint that actually counts is different: fire cover reaches level 5, and in winter operations access is limited to small turboprops of the Pilatus PC-12 type. Put plainly: in the season you want to go to Gstaad, Saanen does not take your jet. No destination page writes that sentence, and it is the most useful one that can be written about Gstaad.

The last leg, and what it costs

Twenty minutes from Sion, forty from Geneva

The workable access is therefore a jet into a larger airport plus the helicopter. From Saanen it is twenty minutes of flying to Sion, forty to Geneva, fifty to Zurich. The helicopter operates from December to March, 08:00 to 20:00, with five passengers per rotation. Sion is closest, applies no parking limits and has a hangar, but requires Type A or B aerodrome qualification from the crew. Geneva asks no qualification but imposes PPR and 21-day slots from mid-December. Then there is Bern, which almost nobody considers: it needs no slots, rarely has capacity problems, has mandatory handling and demanding surrounding terrain, with minimum sector altitude up to 15,800 feet.

Short-notice PPR is an advantage

One good thing about Saanen: PPR comes with a few hours' notice, not weeks. It is the opposite of Geneva, where the slot is booked 21 days ahead, and of Chambéry, where winter weekends are capped at five arrivals an hour. It does require preliminary crew training via the airport's published briefing document: a light requirement compared with Sion or Samedan, but it exists and must be verified.

How we work

Alpine Private Jet works with Air-Dynamic, a Swiss company that arranges charter flights and operates helicopter and air ambulance directly. On Gstaad the first thing we tell you is that in winter your jet does not reach Saanen, and the second is which combination of airport and helicopter costs least in time and money. The intermediation fee is written into the quote. Quote in 1 minute.

Questions we get

Can a jet land at Saanen?

The declared limit is 15,000 kg maximum take-off mass, but in winter fire cover restricts operations to small turboprops of the Pilatus PC-12 type. In season, therefore, a business jet does not get there.

How long is the runway at Saanen?

1,400 metres of asphalt, runway 08/26, at 1,002 metres of altitude.

Which is the nearest jet airport?

Sion, twenty minutes by helicopter. It has 2,000 metres of runway, a hangar and no parking limits, but requires Type A or B aerodrome qualification from the crew.

How long is the helicopter from Geneva?

About forty minutes. From Zurich about fifty, from Sion about twenty.

Is PPR required at Saanen?

Yes, but with only a few hours' notice. Preliminary crew training via the airport's published briefing document is also required.

How late does the helicopter fly?

From December to March, 08:00 to 20:00, with a maximum of five passengers per rotation.
