Geneva LSGG: almost one movement in four is business aviation

Geneva is the alpine airport that can do everything: no special crew qualification, four FBOs, a long runway, open all year. The price of that convenience is that everybody goes there. In 2025 the airport recorded 177,288 total movements, and business aviation accounts for roughly a quarter. From mid-December to late April the door narrows: PPR both inbound and outbound, slots at 21 days.

What constrains the flight Operating notes written in Italian
  • Quattro FBO operano sullo scalo: Dassault, Signature, Swissport, Jet Aviation.
  • Lo scalo è a cavallo del confine e ha un settore francese: la scelta del lato ha effetti doganali che vanno verificati prima della partenza.

What 'a quarter of the airport' actually means

Geneva is the European airport where business aviation weighs heaviest in proportion. In 2024 it counted 29,518 commercial business aviation movements and 13,575 non-commercial ones: together around 43,000, a little under a quarter of total traffic. In 2025 the airport's total movements were 177,288. That number is why everything at Geneva is well organised and everything is rationed: four FBOs, a dedicated terminal, tested procedures, and access rules that in the winter peak leave no room for improvisation.

PPR and slots: how winter works

From 15 December to late April you need PPR both to arrive and to depart. The slot can be booked starting 21 days before, and not earlier. This produces an effect that surprises anyone organising late: the useful window for Christmas opens in early December, and within hours the best bands are gone. The correct way to work is to have the aircraft pre-identified and the request ready on the day the window opens, not to look for the aircraft after taking the slot. On this Geneva is very different from Lyon or Milan, where you can decide the day before.

The advantage the other alpine airports do not have

At Geneva the crew needs no aerodrome qualification. Sion demands Type A or B, Samedan a briefing with an exam valid 24 months, Innsbruck simulator training to operate below 3,000 feet of ceiling or 5 km visibility, Chambéry training if the ceiling drops below 3,500 feet. Geneva, none. In practice this means the whole European fleet is available at Geneva, while at the other alpine airports the list narrows to operators who have invested in the qualification. When dates are tight, that is why Geneva remains the answer even when it is not the closest.

When Geneva is the wrong airport

For Zermatt: four hours of transfer, according to the local tourist board. For Val d'Isère: 220 kilometres and three hours. For Verbier: one hour fifty, when Sion is fifty minutes away. On these destinations Geneva only makes sense combined with a helicopter, or when the nearer airport is closed, full or inaccessible to the chosen aircraft. We always run the sum in two columns: what the flight costs, and what the time costs. On Zermatt the second number is almost always the bigger one.

How we work

Alpine Private Jet works with Air-Dynamic, a Swiss company that arranges charter flights and operates helicopter and air ambulance directly. At Geneva that means the flight and the helicopter last leg are planned together, not bought at two different moments. The intermediation fee is written into the quote. Quote in 1 minute.

Questions we get

Is PPR required at Geneva?

In winter, yes. From 15 December to late April PPR is mandatory both inbound and outbound for general and business aviation.

How far ahead can a slot be booked?

A maximum of 21 days. It cannot be booked earlier, so for peak dates it pays to have the aircraft already identified and to file the request as soon as the window opens.

Does the crew need a special qualification for Geneva?

No, and that is the airport's main advantage over Sion, Samedan, Innsbruck and Chambéry, which all impose specific training.

How much does business aviation weigh at Geneva?

About a quarter of movements. In 2024 there were 29,518 commercial business aviation movements and 13,575 non-commercial; in 2025 the airport recorded 177,288 total movements.

Can I keep the aircraft in a hangar during the ski week?

Hangar availability in the winter peak is limited. The airport-operated hangar is the most accessible, but it must be requested in advance. Sion, by comparison, applies no parking limits.

Which FBOs operate at Geneva?

Dassault Aviation, Signature Flight Support, Swissport Executive Aviation and Jet Aviation.
