Verbier: 50 minutes from Sion, but does your crew hold the qualification?
Sion is fifty minutes by car from Verbier, has no parking limits and has a hangar: on paper it is the perfect airport. There is an obstacle nobody writes on their destination pages: to land there the crew must hold a specific qualification issued by the Swiss authority. If your operator does not have it, the aircraft goes to Geneva and you are an hour and fifty from the resort.

Sion is close. The problem is who may use it
Sion to Verbier is fifty minutes by car. It is the shortest transfer any Swiss resort of this level offers from an airport that can take jets. Sion has 2,000 metres of take-off run available, it has a hangar, and unlike almost every alpine airport it imposes no parking limit: the aircraft can sit there all week. The price of that advantage is the qualification. To land at Sion the crew must hold Type A or Type B aerodrome approval. Type A is daytime only, needs at least 8 km visibility and a 6,500 ft ceiling, and does not descend below 8,000 ft of decision altitude. Type B covers the night. When you ask for a Verbier quote, the first right question is not what it costs, it is whether the crew is qualified for Sion.

Geneva is the alternative, and it costs an hour fifty
Geneva to Verbier is one hour fifty by car, according to the Verbier tourist office. By train it is two hours forty to Le Châble. Geneva demands no special qualification, but from 15 December to late April it imposes PPR both inbound and outbound, with slots booked up to 21 days ahead. In peak weeks those slots run out. The arithmetic is simple: Sion saves you an hour of road but narrows the list of available aircraft; Geneva widens the list but costs you the hour. We show you both options with the price beside each, and you choose.
The wind nobody names
Sion sits at the bottom of the Rhône valley, and when the Föhn arrives from the east conditions change quickly. The same valley hosts gliding activity from March to October and a military area above flight level 130. Three constraints that do not concern the passenger while everything goes well and concern only the passenger when something does not. When we quote Sion we put the alternate in writing, and we tell you what it costs in time and money if you end up there.
The last kilometre: Le Châble, or the altiport
Verbier sits above Le Châble. Cable car and bus climb from the valley station in twenty minutes; the cable car runs from 05:10 to 23:55, so a late return is covered. Anyone wanting to skip the climb lands at the Verbier altiport, at 1,500 metres, which has a landing area, refuelling and a hangar. From there it is 45 minutes to Geneva, 60 to Milan, 50 to Courchevel, 40 to Megève, 50 to Annecy. Five passengers per rotation, and it flies only in suitable weather: this is a mountain altiport, not a city heliport.
