Madonna di Campiglio: the one resort in the Dolomites where the helicopter really does land in the village

Among the Italian Alpine resorts, Campiglio is the only one where the last leg by helicopter is not a hope pinned on the weather: it is an authorised helipad, with a fire service, open at night as well.

Why the jet does not land here

Why you can't land here

There is no airport at Madonna di Campiglio, and no airfield either. We say that with a certainty that is not a figure of speech: the whole ENAC public register for the province of Trento lists twenty-one surfaces, and every one of them is a helipad. Not a single runway. Anyone arriving by jet lands at Bolzano, Brescia, Verona or Bergamo. People sometimes ask us about the airfield at Caderzone, in Val Rendena. It does not exist. It is not closed, not private, not seasonal: it has never been on the register.

What constrains the flight Operating notes written in Italian

The helipad that changes the day

The Campiglio helipad, in the municipality of Pinzolo, is the reason this resort is unlike the others. Twenty-six metres of concrete at 1,505 metres of elevation, raised above ground level, with a fire service, authorised for the public transport of passengers, cleared for night operations, with approvals valid until July 2029. It is worth understanding why that is rare. In Alta Badia the two helipads open to passengers sit above two thousand metres, have no fire service, and one of them has a grass surface. At Courmayeur two helipads out of three were declared ceased in March 2026. At Cortina the hospital helipad is not authorised for public transport. Here, by contrast, the jet-helicopter-hotel leg can be written into a quote without hedging. One thing still does not depend on us: the weather. A helicopter does not fly into a low cloud base, and no authorisation changes that. But that is the only constraint, and it is looked at on the morning itself.

Bolzano, and why it comes before the others

Bolzano is the closest: eighty-nine kilometres, an hour and three quarters or two hours by road. The runway is 1,432 metres by 45 — lengthened and rebuilt in December 2021, not the 1,293 metres almost everyone still quotes — at 787 feet of elevation. It takes turboprops and light jets, with a performance check case by case: the approaches are steep, the terrain is that of an Alpine valley floor, prior permission from the airport operator is required and, for instrument flight, a crew qualification issued by the airport itself. It closes at twenty-two hundred. It is not a convenient airport. It is the one that, with the right aircraft, puts the client closest.

Verona when the timing is awkward

Verona is two hours forty or three hours by road, but it has one thing none of the other three has: it is open twenty-four hours with customs always on duty. A runway of 3,068 metres, CAT III ILS. If the flight arrives from outside Schengen late in the evening, or leaves again at dawn, the answer is Verona even if it is thirty minutes more on the road. Bergamo is comparable in capacity — 2,874 metres, open twenty-four hours, customs — and wants prior permission a day ahead. On night flights there is strong and growing local pressure: we do not take them as guaranteed, and we say so beforehand. Brescia Montichiari is the second airport the tourist board points to, and it is close. Its runway, its hours and its permits we have not verified against a primary source: we write that here instead of pretending, and we confirm them before quoting it.

The road, which here is the easy part

It is Campiglio's least conspicuous advantage and its most concrete: no high pass liable to closure on the main route. You come up from Trento through the Val Rendena, or from the north through the Val di Sole. In Alta Badia you cross the Falzarego or the Sella, which shut without warning after every serious snowfall; here you do not. The only stretch that adds time in winter is the fifteen kilometres of hairpins between Pinzolo and Campiglio. In the province of Trento winter tyres or chains on board are compulsory from 15 November to 15 April outside built-up areas.

The 3Tre, and the days when the valley is full

The men's World Cup slalom is run at night, a few days before Christmas, and it fills Campiglio more than any ski week does. On those days the road, the parking spaces and the hotels count for more than the aircraft: anyone asking for a flight on those dates should be told beforehand, not afterwards. The dates for the 2026/27 season are still a draft awaiting approval.

How we work

We ask for the date, how many of you there are and the luggage — luggage before seats, because an aircraft with the right seats and the wrong hold is no use. Then we say which airport actually holds up for that date and at that hour, and whether the helicopter into the village makes sense or is simply one more cost. The price of the aircraft is set by the operator: ours is an intermediation fee, and it is written in the quote. It matters to us that the client knows exactly what service he is buying.

Questions we get

Which airport is closest to Madonna di Campiglio?

Bolzano, at eighty-nine kilometres and about two hours by road. It is also the most constrained: a runway of 1,432 metres, prior permission compulsory, closing at twenty-two hundred.

Is there an airfield at Caderzone or in Val Rendena?

No. The ENAC public register for the province of Trento lists twenty-one surfaces and all of them are helipads: there is no runway anywhere in Val Rendena.

Can you reach Campiglio by helicopter?

Yes, and it is the only one of the Italian resorts where we can say so with no administrative reservations: the helipad is authorised for the public transport of passengers, it has a fire service and it is cleared at night as well. The weather remains, and that depends on no authorisation.

Is it worth landing at Venice?

Almost never. Venice is the best of the north-eastern airports for capacity, but it is nearly four hours by road. For Campiglio the geography says Bolzano, Brescia, Verona or Bergamo.

What aircraft can get into Bolzano?

Turboprops and light jets, with a performance check case by case. For a larger aircraft you land at Verona or Bergamo, which have long runways and are open twenty-four hours.

When is the 3Tre?

The World Cup slalom is run at night a few days before Christmas. The dates for the 2026/27 season are still a FIS draft. On those days the valley is full.

Tell us the date. We tell you where you land.

Give us the day and how many of you are travelling: we come back with the airport that holds up on that date, the aircraft that fits your luggage and what the last leg costs.
