Val Thorens: 2,300 metres up, 45 minutes from Lyon by helicopter

Val Thorens is the highest resort in Europe: 2,300 metres. The altiport that carries its name sits at the same altitude, and that changes everything: it is a seasonal field, operating according to the weather, not an ordinary heliport. From Geneva it is 40 minutes of flying, from Chambéry 25, from Lyon 45.

Why the jet does not land here

Altitude is not a brochure detail

Val Thorens sits at 2,300 metres and so does its altiport. At 2,300 metres the air is thin and a helicopter's performance drops: the useful load you carry in the valley is not the load you carry here. That is not a problem, it is a planning constraint: it means the number of rotations for a group of eight with equipment is not the same as it would be from Geneva. Anyone quoting your last leg without asking how much luggage you have has not done the calculation.

What constrains the flight Operating notes written in Italian

Where you come from, and in how long

By helicopter to the Val Thorens altiport it is 25 minutes from Chambéry, 30 from Annecy, 35 from Grenoble, 40 from Geneva, 45 from Lyon, 15 from Courchevel. The field has helicopter parking and ground handling, and flights run 07:00 to 23:00 seven days a week. The condition to keep in mind is that opening is seasonal and weather-dependent: at that altitude a day of low cloud closes the field. When we quote Val Thorens we always put the road fallback and its duration in writing.

Chambéry, Grenoble or Lyon

Chambéry is closest but most congested: around thirty stands, no hangar, five arrivals an hour on winter weekends. Grenoble has 3,050 metres of runway and asks no crew qualification, but its peak month is precisely February. Lyon has 4,000 metres, no curfew and is the only one that survives an evening departure. The choice is not geographic: it depends on the date, the aircraft and the return time. On Val Thorens the combination that works most often is Lyon plus helicopter, because the flight covers forty minutes of what on the road is a long journey.

How we work

Alpine Private Jet works with Air-Dynamic, a Swiss company that arranges charter flights and operates helicopter and air ambulance directly. On a destination at 2,300 metres the last leg is the technical part of the journey, and we plan it with the flight. We tell you how many rotations your group and your bags need before giving you a price. The intermediation fee is written inside. Quote in 1 minute.

Questions we get

Can a jet land at Val Thorens?

No. The altiport sits at 2,300 metres and is a seasonal helicopter field. The jet stops at Chambéry, Geneva, Grenoble, Annecy or Lyon.

How long does the helicopter take?

25 minutes from Chambéry, 30 from Annecy, 35 from Grenoble, 40 from Geneva, 45 from Lyon, 15 from Courchevel.

Is the altiport always open?

No. It operates seasonally and according to the weather. At 2,300 metres low cloud closes the field: the road plan must always be prepared.

How many people does the helicopter carry?

Five passengers plus the pilot. At 2,300 metres, though, useful load is lower than at a valley heliport: with bulky luggage it can take two rotations.

Which airport is best?

Chambéry is closest but most congested. Grenoble is easy but full in February. Lyon is the only one that holds an evening departure and is often the best pairing with a helicopter.

Is Val Thorens really Europe's highest resort?

Yes, the village sits at 2,300 metres, and its altiport is at the same altitude.

Tell us the date. We tell you where you land.

Give us the day and how many of you are travelling: we come back with the airport that holds up on that date, the aircraft that fits your luggage and what the last leg costs.
